Need to buy car insurance this quarter? Be prepared for the highest costs of the year. According to an article in The Telegraph from last month, the end of British Summer Time is the most dangerous time of the year for drivers. But what does this mean for our insurance premiums?
Kara Gammell writes that during the two week period around the time when the clocks change, insurers witness a significant increase in the amount of claims made, with an average increase of five per cent every year. It is simply more dangerous because motorists suddenly find themselves driving home in the dark, but it is dusk that is considered the most dangerous time to drive because our eyes are constantly getting used to the fast diminishing light.
The latest statistics form the AA show that the price of an average motor insurance premium has increased by £39 to £486 since the same time period last year, whilst in 1994 the average customer would have paid just £328.
However, despite this, the article details how insurers are in fact still making a loss, as for every £100 they receive, £105 is spent on payouts and it is young men who make the biggest claims, an average of £4,500 in comparison to young women who claim an average £2,500. The costs for drivers who are over 30 average at £1,400 for men and £1,200 for women.
As drivers gradually get used to road conditions, it would seem that premiums should begin to go down again in due time. Yet, strangely it is not only car insurance that has risen at the moment, it can be seen to have also had an affect on building insurance premiums. The AAs most recent findings also show that the average annual building insurance policy is about £3 more expensive than the last quarter, whilst buildings cover has risen by about £13 pounds since last year. Alternatively, homeowners insurance has dropped this quarter to an almost £5 cheaper average.
The AA has also identified that some insurers have withdrawn the option of taking out Third Party Fire and Theft, the cheapest and most popular option among young drivers. This means that currently it is no doubt more important than ever to shop around for the best deal - not only to make sure you get the cheapest deal, but also to be sure that you get the exact deal that you want.
